The Fresh & Onlys

"Animal of One" b/w "How High Was I"

April 29, 2014 Mexican Summer

Atop Fresh & Onlys guitarist Wymond Miles’ chilling arpeggios and impeccable textural flare, “Animal of One” deals broad lyrical gestures on the ephemerality of forgiving and forgetting. Typical of vocalist Tim Cohen’s veiled humor, his delivery hearkens to the emphatic proclamations of a corner preacher. The howled central image, his “Animal of One,” punctuates the slew of maxims in an utterly climactic and evocative refrain. By contrast, b-side “How High Was I” is pure down-home pop – wistful and sweet over a bed of sleepy organs. Cohen recalls a particularly hallucinatory dream of people as insects, scaling mountaintops exhibiting animal furs.
